And so a Derby girl was born

Friday 22 July 2011

So i was thinking....

Yeah, thats where i usually go wrong, by thinking, lmao.........

So one night i was talking to my ahem...better half......cough! we were throwing ideas out about what i could start doing to better help manage stress, get out of the house and have a little fun at the same time.  It was a hard conversation since my idea of excersise is walking to the fridge, back to the couch and don't forget to stretch! yeah stretch out back on the couch....anywho, can't remember who mentioned it, either him or me, but roller derby came up.  I said hey, i would love that, but i didn't think there was any place around here that had roller derby going on.

Next day i went into work and my boss came into work saying she wanted to show me a video, so of course we sat right down to watch it... hey we were working!!........and lo an' behold, it was a video from Muddy River Rollers!!! MONCTON HAS ROLLER DERBY!!!!!!!! i just couldn't believe it! I looked them up and tried to get some more info...about three months later I was at the Disability Awareness walk and who should i see but some beautiful, awesome, sexy Derby girls who were there in support of Disability week.  Of course i immediatly started chatting to them asking questions and saying that i was very interested, turns out the were DIEPPE ROLLER DERBY.....after chatting and exchanging contact info i said i would see them the following Wednesday night at 'Fresh Meat Practice' (yeah its totally called that, LOL)

All week i was so excited to go to Derby practice to try it out.  They had told me that they had some extra gear so that the newbies could give it a go before having to run out to purchase any gear.  Perfect!!
And a good friend of mine also wanted to try it out so we planned on both going together!

WEDNESDAY..................

So i find myself at Fresh Meat Practice, already sweating i might add and nervous as all hell.  What the hell was i thinking, 33, slightly overweight...ahem ok, more than slightly and not so physically inclined.  I found myself wondering if the doctors at the ER would do up a pretty cast for my broken appendages or if they would make me stick with white as punishment for thinking i was still a teenager....
Dii Mented, Coach for the new victims.oops, i mean fresh meat handed me some gear, and said don't worry, you will be fine....i wasn't convinced but what the hell, i was there now, couldn't very well back out now!!

So i suited up......now keep in mind, its been a long long time since i had skates on, only ever really used roller blades....my cousin and i, when we were kids had a pair of roller skates, she would put one on and i would wear the other one...somehow i don't think this made me ready for this!!

All dressed and not so ready to roll...i realized that although i can stand up, i can't move...no really, i can't move myself...Dii Mented seriously rolled me around on the floor....wow! what skill i had!

Dii Mented took me and the other new girls and started teaching up the basics, you know, how to stop, roll, fall, etc...that woman has patience of......well....i don't know but boy, she sure is great! They really do teach you from the ground up, even if your like me and can't move on your own volition...no worries, they WILL get you rolling!! lol

Now i have to get serious here for a few moments, because i have to mention that these girls, all of the Dieppe Roller Derby Girls, were great!! very welcoming and supportive....for example...when i finally got the guts to let myself fall, while shouting...I HAVE PADS!! they all cheered! (yes i know, i'm a little off) AND when i finally was able to get myself up off the floor after struggling for awhile...they cheered me....it made even the smallest of victory for me seem so much more!

That first night was hard, hard work....but you know, even though i wasn't able to actually move myself i was hooked!!!!! couldn't wait for the next time!
